e-Courier – Epic FHIR Integration
e-Courier provides a direct, bi-directional integration between Epic and the e-Courier delivery dispatch platform, built on the HL7® FHIR® R4 standard. It lets healthcare organizations dispatch prescription and laboratory specimen deliveries directly from Epic and receive delivery status and proof of delivery back in Epic, without manual re-keying.
What it does
- Inbound: a delivery request raised in Epic (a FHIR
ServiceRequest, with its related Patient, Practitioner, Location, Specimen, and MedicationDispense resources) is created as a dispatch order in e-Courier and routed to a driver. - Outbound: as the driver records pickup, delivery, and exceptions, e-Courier
posts status back to Epic as a FHIR
Task, and the captured proof of delivery (signature, signer, time, and location) as a FHIRDocumentReference, linked to the originating order.
Authentication & security
- System-to-system authentication using OAuth 2.0 backend services (SMART Backend Services / RFC 7523 JWT client assertion).
- All traffic runs over TLS 1.2 or higher. Only the data required to dispatch and identify a delivery is exchanged; no clinical or diagnostic detail is retrieved or stored.
Availability
This integration is offered to e-Courier customers and their healthcare end-customers as part of an onboarding engagement. Epic Vendor Services / Showroom registration is completed per organization.
